Short on Money? Which Bills to Pay First — Guide

When money is short, the order you pay bills matters as much as the amount. Here's the priority order I use with clients.

Priority 1: Keep a roof and the lights on

  • Rent or mortgage
  • Electricity, heat and water

Priority 2: Get to work and eat

  • Groceries
  • Car payment, insurance and gas — or transit
  • Phone (needed for work and job search)

Priority 3: Secured and legally required debts

  • Child support
  • Tax payment plans

Priority 4: Unsecured debts

  • Credit cards, medical bills, personal loans — call to arrange hardship plans

Priority 5: Everything else

  • Streaming, memberships, non-essentials — pause them
Coach's noteCall before you miss a payment. Utilities and many lenders have hardship programs — but they're far more flexible before an account goes past due.

If a small timing gap is the problem, a Vola Finance advance can bridge it. If the gap repeats every month, see breaking the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle.
