How to Build Credit from Scratch: A 12-Month Vola Finance Roadmap

How to Build Credit from Scratch
How to Build Credit from Scratch

Millions of Americans have no credit file or too little history to generate a score. Building credit from scratch is slow at first, then compounds. Here's the roadmap I gave first-time borrowers at my credit union.

Months 1–2: Start with what you already pay

Enable rent reporting through Vola Finance's credit builder so on-time rent becomes positive payment history. Pull your free credit reports to confirm whether a file exists.

Months 2–3: Add one primary tradeline

Consider a secured credit card from a bank or credit union, or a credit-builder loan. Choose products with no annual fee that report to all three bureaus.

Months 3–6: Build perfect habits

  • Use the card for one small recurring bill
  • Set autopay for the full statement balance
  • Keep utilization under 10%

Months 6–9: Your first score

A FICO® Score generally requires at least one account open six months or more. Check your score and review CreditMap.

Months 9–12: Graduate

Ask your issuer about upgrading the secured card to unsecured and getting your deposit back. Avoid applying for several new accounts at once.

MonthMilestone
1Rent reporting on; reports pulled
3Secured card or builder loan opened
6First FICO® Score generated
12Graduate to unsecured card
