How to Read Your Credit Report and Fix Errors — Guide

About one in five consumers has an error on at least one credit report, according to past FTC research. Reading your report takes 30 minutes and can uncover mistakes that cost you points.

The four main sections

  1. Personal information: names, addresses, employers. Check for unfamiliar entries that could signal identity theft.
  2. Accounts (tradelines): each card and loan with balance, limit, status and payment history.
  3. Inquiries: hard inquiries (applications) and soft inquiries (don't affect scores).
  4. Public records & collections: collection accounts and certain public records.

Common errors to look for

  • Accounts you never opened
  • Late payments you made on time
  • Paid debts still showing a balance
  • Duplicate collection accounts
  • Wrong credit limits (inflates utilization)

How to dispute an error

  1. File a dispute online with each bureau that shows the error.
  2. Include documentation (statements, payment confirmations).
  3. Bureaus generally must investigate within 30 days.
  4. Also contact the company that reported the information.
Analyst tipCheck that rent payments from Vola Finance's rent reporting appear correctly too. If they're missing or misdated, raise it with the reporting service.
